robin-longbottom: okay so I am about 5 episodes... →
Sunday smile, thanks to comicallyvariant: robin-longbottom: okay so I am about 5 episodes into Game of Thrones and I have been using code names for the characters to describe the events to my sister, since she doesn’t watch and can’t keep up with the names for example: Ned = Boromir Robb = Boromir Jr. Catelyn = Lady Boromir Jon = Sadface McBastard Daenerys = Queen Fabulous Viserys =...

My current summer read is George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire saga — recently turned into HBO’s Game of Thrones TV series, which indirectly got me reading it in the first place. (Put Sean Bean on the cover of just about any book, and I’ll buy it). The TV series was beautiful, entertaining and captivating, but the books are even more so. Martin’s writing...

Gin & Tonic Sorbet?! →
Ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod. wellthatsnifty pointed out this wonderful gem: So, apparently, you can turn favorite alcoholic beverages into a nice, classy sorbet!  And, better still, you don’t even need that much: 1/2 cup sugar 1 large or 2 medium limes, zested and juiced 2 1/2 cups tonic water 3 fl. oz. shot gin I intend to give this a go ASAP!

Make your own decadent instant hot chocolate mix →
I still remember a weak and watery blend we made in Home Ec class in the 70s, which sort of guaranteed a life-long customer base for Carnation. This recipe, on the other hand, looks absolutely delicious - and simple. Click for details, or just go ahead and mix up a batch:Best-Ever Hot Cocoa Mix Makes about 20 servings 3 cups nonfat dry milk 2 cups confectioners’ sugar 1 1/2...

French Words With No English Translation →
Because I love language, of any flavour… Dépaysement: The sensation of being in another country. La douleur exquise: The heart-wrenching pain of wanting someone you can’t have. Even a Sex in the City episode was named after it! Chômer: To be unemployed, but because it’s a verb, it makes the state active. Profiter: To make the most of or take advantage of. Flâneur: As defined in the...

Does Language Influence Culture? →
A very interesting WSJ article outlines how language profoundly influences how we see the world. Here’s a taste: For example, in Pormpuraaw, a remote Aboriginal community in Australia, the indigenous languages don’t use terms like “left” and “right.” Instead, everything is talked about in terms of absolute cardinal directions (north, south, east, west), which...

The Willpower Paradox →
Compelling article from Scientific American arguing that willpower doesn’t work as well as we collectively seem to think it does. [One group] was basically putting their minds into wondering mode, while the [second group] was asserting themselves and their will. It is the difference between “Will I do this?” and “I will do this.” The results were provocative. People with wondering minds...
