Soothing ambient sound

Living in a small home with a teenage daughter whose eclectic music tastes unfortunately include screamo and J-pop, it can sometimes be difficult to concentrate on work… or on relaxation, for that matter. I’ve found that the recordings at SimplyNoise.com - pure white, pink or brown noise - can make a difference, particularly when trying to focus on work. I like the brown noise best; it has a deeper tone to it that I can feel in my chest and find almost tactile compared to pink and white. Today I discovered iSerenity.com (via Lifehacker) which offers 31 looping sound “environments” to suit all tastes - from the standard (ocean, rain, birdsong, crackling fire) to the unexpected (highway sounds, typewriter, restaurant sounds, a New York street-scape). As the Lifehacker commenters note, some of the tracks are pretty poor, including extra noise and noticeable looping, but some are quite nice.

I totally love “Lightning at Sunset” by Sam Javanrouh (and all of his photography, for that matter). I made it my desktop wallpaper a few days ago, and I continue to be amazed by it. Click through for the full-sized image, since the smaller image here just doesn’t do it justice.
