My current summer read is George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire saga — recently turned into HBO’s Game of Thrones TV series, which indirectly got me reading it in the first place. (Put Sean Bean on the cover of just about any book, and I’ll buy it).
The TV series was beautiful, entertaining and captivating, but the books are even more so. Martin’s writing fully rounds out the characters and the world in which they live, and flavours the story with a very tempting cuisine (“summer greens tossed with pecans, grapes, red fennel, and crumbled cheese, hot crab pie, spiced squash…”).
Which brings me to the Inn at the Crossroads, a stylish food blog with recipes based on the dishes in the books, including medieval recipes alongside modern remakes. It’s an entertaining browse and a bit of tasty inspiration.
