My Firefox Add-On Collections

For anyone that’s interested, I’m maintaining a couple of Firefox add-on packs. My personal must-have collection includes those that I find to be indispensible, and which I’ve mentioned from time to time in other posts. The “I also like…” pack is a collection of add-ons that, while not technically indispensible, are helpful and/or cool enough for me to keep them anyway.

Firefox Stuff I Love

I love Firefox because of the powerful customizability available through its extensions. While this can lead to a bit of a kid-in-the-candy-shop add-on extravaganza, I try to keep it (somewhat) trim and zen-like with only those tools that I find indispensable. It seems that about this time each year, I do a bit of an inventory to spring-clean my online environment. Here’s 2009’s roundup:

New (to me) and promising:

  • XMarks: Having recently discovered the joys of portable applications (indispensible during my recent travels), I’ve come to love XMarks, which synchronizes bookmarks (and optionally, passwords) via the web for use among multiple browsers and multiple systems. Combined with Firefox Portable on a USB stick, it’s like I’ve never even left my desk.
  • Ubiquity: Mozilla’s very cool natural-language command overlay. I’ve been watching its progress off and on over the past months, and finally started playing with it this week. I particularly like its clean integration with gmail. For a better explanation of what it can do for you, check out lifehacker.com’s excellent introduction.
  • Cooliris: Mmmmm, really tasty eye-candy for viewing images and videos on the web — but more than that, it’s extremely useful in browsing large collections.

My must-haves:

  • Adblock Plus: Seriously unclutters and speeds up a webpage by weeding out the ads, so you can focus on the content.
  • BBCodeXtra: Adds right-click menu options to easily insert BBCode/Html/XHtml tags. A great time-saver if you do a lot of forum/blog writing.
  • Cool Previews: Possibly the best-ever navigation extension. This lets you preview and navigate links through mouseover popups, without leaving your current page or tab.
  • IE Tab: Yes, there are still sites on the web that only work properly when viewed using Internet Explorer. For those cases, this is a very useful little add-on; a single click of the icon switches your browser engine to IE for that single tab.
  • Tab Mix Plus: Lots of added functionality for tab browsing. You’ll wonder how how you lived without it.
  • PDF Download: A great tool for managing web-based PDF documents. When you click on a PDF link, you’re offered the choice of downloading the file, launching a PDF reader of your choice (not necessarily the system default), or viewing the page in html.
