One minute of wonder to put things in perspective, from infinity-imagined:

A time-lapse taken from the front of the International Space Station as it orbits our planet at night. This movie begins over the Pacific Ocean and continues over North and South America before entering daylight near Antarctica. Visible cities, countries and landmarks include (in order) Vancouver Island, Victoria, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Fransisco, Los Angeles. Phoenix. Multiple cities in Texas, New Mexico and Mexico. Mexico City, the Gulf of Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, Lightning in the Pacific Ocean, Guatemala, Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and the Amazon. Also visible is the Earths ionosphere (thin yellow line) and the stars of our galaxy.

I totally love these three wonderful shorts - a reminder to grab life by the tail and hang on. Move, eat, learn.

3 guys, 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38 thousand miles, an exploding volcano, 2 cameras and almost a terabyte of footage… all to turn 3 ambitious linear concepts based on movement, learning and food ….into 3 beautiful and hopefully compelling short films…..

= a trip of a lifetime.

More than just a splash of colour: Eric Fischer has put together an interesting Flickr set called Locals and Tourists, which maps out and compares the number of photos taken by locals and tourists in over a hundred locations around the world - San Francisco is shown here. Each image is annotated, offering food for thought when planning your next trip, or when reminiscing about your last visit. There’s also a map-based interface to simplify browsing. (via lifehacker)

You can't make this up: Pack a gun to secure your checked baggage

I have a starter pistol for all my cases. All I have to do upon check-in is tell the airline ticket agent that I have a weapon to declare…I’m given a little card to sign, the card is put in the case, the case is given to a TSA official who takes my key and locks the case, and gives my key back to me.

That’s the procedure. The case is extra-tracked…TSA does not want to lose a weapons case. This reduces the chance of the case being lost to virtually zero.

It’s a great way to travel with camera gear…I’ve been doing this since Dec 2001 and have had no problems whatsoever.
There you have it: airline travel has become a very sad commentary on our society. (via boingboing)

Kashiwa Mystery Cafe

Cabel Sasser tells a wonderful story about stumbling upon a unique cafe during his travels in Japan - one where you order for the next patron, rather than for yourself.

The Ogori cafe was an unforgettable travel moment, and an idea that has stuck with me: It was a complete surprise in our day. It encouraged communication between total strangers or, in this case, members of the Kashiwa community and a couple of weird guys from Oregon. It forced one to “let go”, just for a brief moment, of the total control we’re so used to exerting through commerce. It led you to taste something new, that you might not normally have ordered. It was a delight.

La grotte de Lascaux

Wow. Just … wow. Here is, as capucha aptly puts it, a “mind blowing virtual tour of Lascaux and its 16,000 years old cave paintings.” Quite breathtaking and fascinating.
